NEW DELHI: When he succeeded Tim Paine to become the captain of the Australian Test team in November 2021, Pat Cummins became the first fast bowler to take on the full-time role of Test captain for Australia since Ray Lindwall, who led in one match in 1956.

Cummins’ captaincy debut was a dominant one, as Australia retained the Ashes with a comprehensive 4-0 series win against England at home. He also excelled personally, taking 21 wickets in the series.
Under Cummins’ leadership, Australia won the Test series in Pakistan in 2022 (1-0) after 24 years and performed admirably in other overseas tours, reflecting his strategic mindset in varying conditions.
Cummins captained Australia to victory in the 2023 WTC Final against India, cementing Australia’s status as the leading Test team.
In the third Test against India in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy, Cummins added another feather to his cap when dismissed Nitish Reddy in the rain-marred second session of Day 4 at The Gabba in Brisbane.
Nitish Reddy edges a Cummins delivery onto his stumps as India were reduced to 194/7 at the stroke of Tea.
With Nitish Reddy’s wicket, Cummins went ahead of West Indies legend Sir Garfield Sobers with most wickets in Test cricket as captain.
With 187 and 138 wickets respectively, Imran Khan and Richie Benaud head the list.
