Sam Konstas, the young Australian batter, quickly became a fan favorite during the Boxing Day Test. His impressive scoops against Jasprit Bumrah and energetic presence on the field caught the attention of many, including Steve Smith.
Konstas scored a remarkable 60 runs off 65 balls in his debut Test match at Melbourne. Australia won the fourth Test by a significant margin of 184 runs.
His innovative shots, especially the scoops and laps against Bumrah, not only entertained the crowd but also gave Australia a strategic advantage.
“I mean, he’s mad. I think he really enjoyed himself under the lid there,” Smith commented on 7Cricket, with a hint of admiration in his laughter.
Smith’s reaction perhaps mirrored his own youthful exuberance on the field, which earned him the nickname “Smudge.”
Konstas’s dynamism wasn’t limited to batting. He maintained a constant chatter while fielding, engaging with the Indian batters from close positions.
Smith acknowledged Konstas’s energetic fielding, observing his interactions with the Indian players.
“He was chirping. I think at one point (Yashasvi) Jaiswal was actually trying to hit the ball at him to shut him up a bit. But look he’s brought great energy (to the team),” the former Australian captain noted.
Even when Bumrah was dismissed in India’s second innings, caught by Smith off Scott Boland’s bowling, Konstas didn’t shy away from a spirited send-off.
“He’s brought a real confidence and it’s nice to see him start so well in his first Test match And I think he’s got a bright future,” Smith added, praising the young player’s promising start.
