NEW DELHI: In a year dominated by T20 cricket, with the World Cup staged across the USA and the Caribbean, Indian bowlers delivered stellar performances, playing a pivotal role in India clinching their second T20 World Cup title. Leading the charge was left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh, who emerged as India’s top wicket-taker in T20Is for 2024.
Arshdeep grabbed 36 wickets in 18 matches at an outstanding average of 13.50 and an economy rate of 7.49. His best performance came during a World Cup game in New York, where he dismantled the USA’s batting lineup with figures of 4/9.
Spinner Ravi Bishnoi followed as the second-highest wicket-taker for India, claiming 22 wickets in 16 games. With an average of 20.86 and an economy of 7.52, Bishnoi’s consistency was a key factor in India’s success. His standout spell was 4/13 against Zimbabwe in Harare.
Axar Patel was third on the list, with 20 wickets in 16 matches. The left-arm spinner maintained a remarkable average of 16.30 and an economy of 7.08, with his best performance (3/23) coming in a crucial World Cup encounter against England in Providence.
Mystery spinner Varun Chakravarthy showcased his match-winning abilities, taking 17 wickets in just seven T20Is at an average of 12.41. His economy rate of 7.53 and a sensational five-wicket haul (5/17) against South Africa in Gqeberha underscored his impact.
Star all-rounder Hardik Pandya rounded off the top five, with 16 wickets in 17 matches. Pandya’s contributions were decisive, especially in the T20 World Cup final against South Africa. His most memorable moment came when he dismissed David Miller in the final over, sealing the championship for India. Pandya’s best figures of the year, 3/20, also came in the same match.
Washington Sundar matched Pandya’s wicket tally with 16 wickets in 12 T20Is, boasting a phenomenal average of 12.75 and an economy of just 5.82.
Among the pacers, Jasprit Bumrah stood out with 15 wickets in just eight matches. Bumrah’s breathtaking average of 8.26 and an economy rate of 4.17 highlighted his dominance, making him a crucial weapon in India’s T20 arsenal.
Completing the top 10 for India were Kuldeep Yadav (11 wickets), Mukesh Kumar (10 wickets), and Avesh Khan (9 wickets), all of whom made notable contributions during the year.
