NEW DELHI: Jasprit Bumrah achieved a remarkable feat by becoming the first bowler to take 50 Test wickets in 2024. The star Indian pacer reached this feat during the first innings of the pink-ball Test against Australia at Adelaide Oval on Friday.
Celebrating his 31st birthday, Bumrah struck to dismiss Usman Khawaja for his 50th wicket, who was caught at first slip by captain Rohit Sharma.
In the current World Test Championship cycle, Jasprit Bumrah ranks fourth on the wicket-takers list with 54 dismissals. However, his exceptional average of 15.29 places him at the top among bowlers with at least 50 wickets.
Bumrah also set an unfortunate record by becoming only the fourth Indian to score a duck in Test cricket on his birthday.
Former wicketkeeper-batter Syed Kirmani was the first Indian to record a duck on his birthday, doing so in the 1978 Kolkata Test against the West Indies on his 29th birthday.
Venkatapathy Raju followed, scoring a duck on his 27th birthday during the 1996 Test at Trent Bridge, Nottingham, against England.
Before Bumrah, Ishant Sharma registered a birthday duck in the 2018 Test against England at Southampton.
