NEW DELHI: Bangladesh have unveiled their 15-member squad for the ICC Champions Trophy, with the absence of veteran all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan making headlines.
The 37-year-old, a pivotal figure in Bangladesh’s cricket history, has been barred from bowling in competitions under the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) jurisdiction.
This decision followed an independent assessment at Chennai’s Sri Ramachandra Centre for Sports Science.

Nazmul Hossain Shanto has been entrusted with the captaincy as the team eyes a maiden Champions Trophy title. Bangladesh reached the semi-final in the 2017 edition and will look to go further this time.
However, the absence of Tamim Iqbal, who recently retired from international cricket, is another setback. Tamim was among Bangladesh’s top scorers in the previous tournament, and his experience at the top order will be missed.
Experienced campaigners like wicketkeeper-batter Mushfiqur Rahim and all-rounder Mahmudullah will take on the critical responsibility of anchoring the team.

  • 24 February: Bangladesh vs New Zealand, Rawalpindi
  • 27 February: Pakistan vs Bangladesh, Rawalpindi

Alongside the seasoned players, exciting newcomers like Parvez Hossain Emon, making his ODI debut, bring fresh promise. The young left-handed batter, who has featured in seven T20Is, has earned a spot thanks to his aggressive stroke play.
Rising pacer Nahid Rana, who made an impactful ODI debut against the West Indies, is another addition highlighting the squad’s emphasis on youth.
Shakib and Tamim’s absence leaves a void, but this opens the door for promising talents to step into the spotlight. The team’s blend of experience and youthful exuberance presents an opportunity to foster new heroes on cricket’s global stage.
Bangladesh’s campaign will largely depend on experienced heads like Rahim and Mahmudullah, who must guide the squad through challenges. Building on their 2017 semi-final success, the Tigers are determined to exceed expectations and aim for the coveted silverware in the highly anticipated tournament.
