NEW DELHI: Australia secured a thrilling six-wicket victory in the fifth Test against India at Sydney, winning the series 3-1 and confirming their spot in the World Test Championship final.
Early on day three, India’s innings concluded at 157, managing to add only 16 runs to their overnight score of 141-6. Scott Boland delivered an outstanding performance, claiming 6-45 and securing 10 wickets in the match.

Chasing 162, Australia achieved their target before the tea session, despite facing an Indian bowling attack without the injured Jasprit Bumrah. This victory marked Australia’s first Border-Gavaskar trophy win since 2014-15.

The match remained competitive as Australia lost three wickets before lunch, including Steve Smith who fell tantalisingly close to the 10,000-run milestone, just one run short of becoming the fourth Australian to achieve this feat.

Usman Khawaja contributed a steady 41, whilst Travis Head (34 not out) and newcomer Beau Webster (39 not out) guided the team to victory.

Pat Cummins, Australia’s captain, shared his thoughts after the series win: “This is unreal. Few of us didn’t have this Trophy. Lived up to all the hype. Just been clear with our plans. We tried to be proactive, Ultimately worked, out. Immensely proud. We weren’t at our best at Perth. We had a lot of fun playing alongside each other. I love playing with these guys. Such a special group. Feel privilged to be part of such a team. Really proud of what we have achieved.”

He continued: “Always nice to have a squad. Three debutants in this series fitted in well. They contributed in different times. Pretty happy with how I played. I had a fresh up coming into this series. These are the big series you prepare for. Some keen moments when our main stays really stood up. You need to do that to beat a side like India. Our guys put up their hands up. Would go down one of my most favourite Test series. Thanks to Rohit and Jasprit.”

Cummins also acknowledged the spectators: “The fans made the series. Every venue was incredible. MCG was off its head. Three sell outs in three days here at Sydney. Shows why Test cricket is so special and why we love playing it so much. Seen everyone turning out in pink and celebrating an amazing cause is a great way to kick start the year.”
The victory ensures Australia will defend their World Test Championship against South Africa in the June final at Lord’s.
