The World Chess Championship 2024 between D Gukesh and Ding Liren is currently tied at 6-6 with the first player to reach 7.5 points assured of the crowd. With two games to go, the showdown in Singapore is at a knives edge.
The challenger from India, D Gukesh let his lead slip in Game 12, and allowed champion Liren to level matters. They will return for the 13th game on Wednesday.
It has already been quite a roller-coaster ride for the two Grandmasters. The 18-year-old Gukesh, who is the youngest challenger, and the 32-year-old defending champion from China have been locked in an intriguing battle in which both have held leads for not too long.
Liren won the opening game but saw Gukesh clinch Game 3 to draw parity. Then Gukesh clinched Game 11, only for Liren to level matters in the 12th game. In between, they played seven straight draws.
With backs against the wall, it won’t be too far off to say that nerves could play a role in how the World Chess Championship 2024 plays out in the final stretch.
What happens if the World Chess Championship is tied after 14 games?
If the scores are still tied in the $2.5 million championship after 14 games, tie-break games of shorter duration will be played to decide the winner.
The rapid tiebreak games, scheduled for December 13, will begin with a set of four games of 15 minutes each plus a 10-second increment per move.
If there is no winner, then the showdown will move to a two-game rapid match of 15 minutes with a 10-second increment per move.
If no winner there, then there will be a blitz match of two games timed at three minutes with an increment of two seconds after each move.
And even after all this, no player buckles or outfoxes the opponent, there will be sudden death blitz of single games until there’s an outcome.
Tie-break structure:

  • Rapid Match: Four games, 15 minutes + 10-second increment.
  • Mini Rapid Match: Two games, 10 minutes + 5-second increment.
  • Blitz Match: Two games, 3 minutes + 2-second increment.
  • Sudden Death Blitz: Single games until a decisive result
